Milestones: What are They and Why They Matter?

Have you notice that new feature on ImBlaze that says "Log a Milestone" and wondered what that even means?

A Milestone in ImBlaze is a short, intentional record of a meaningful moment in a student’s journey. This can be an event, skill demonstration, or project checkpoint worth returning to at reflection time or exhibition. Anyone (student, advisor, coordinator, or mentor) can add one. A strong milestone names the moment, links to evidence, and explains why it matters. This can be a key to celebrate a student's progression, check in with them about where they’re at, or get a snapshot into their learning.

Logging a milestone is simple! Here is a quick look at how to do it.

Student (mobile or web)

Educator / Advisor

Mentor

Stuck on how to encourage a student or mentor to record a milestone or need help writing one yourself? Here are some prompting questions and example recorded moments:

Student:

What exactly did I do?

Who was there or what made it an important moment for you?

What did this show I can do or what’s my next step?

“I hosted my first art event today for the organization! I did the flyers and the budget and the agenda and used the mic to talk to everyone. I was so nervous but I did it and people were really nice.”

Educator:

What did the student demonstrate?

What evidence did you see or collect?

What’s the learning implication?

“Three Months Committed! Jenny was really nervous about her ability to show up consistently and on time, and as of today, she’s been at her internship for three months and everything seems to be going great!”

Mentor:

What specific task/behavior did the student perform?

What did you observe (one specific detail)?

What’s a next step for them?

“Taught first class! Aaron led his first activity today with our fourth graders. He created the lesson plan, delivered it well, and even used some of the classroom management skills we talked about. Can’t wait to have them do another lesson!”

As always, reach out to your ImBlaze contact if you want some help thinking though how milestones can best be used at your school.
